Council investigating fly-tipping at school eco garden in Ballymoney

A young people's green initiative in Ballymoney is to be closely monitored after recent reports of illegal fly-tipping.

A sofa and tyres were dumped beside the children’s eco garden at Ballymoney Model Primary School.

Appealing for an end to the activity Councillor Darryl Wilson said it was the most rececent in a number of such incidents within the grounds of the school.

Mr Wilson continued: “This type of behaviour is wholly unacceptable, I would remind those responsible that such actions are an offence which carry implications.

“We currently have adequate recycling/ refuse facilities on the Knock Road and Burnquarter Road in Ballymoney which provide an environment where people can dispose of such items.”

The Ulster Unionist representative praised Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council for dealing with the discarded material.

He said: “I woukd like to thank council staff for their rapid response and assistance in this matter. The area will be closely monitored in future.”

A spokesperson for Causeway Coast and Glens Council confirmed that it is in receipt of a complaint with respect to fly-tipping at the Model School Ballymoney and is currently investigating the matter.

The local government authority spokesperson added: “The items have subsequently been removed and properly disposed of.

“Enquiries are continuing with a view to taking further action against the offenders in line with council’s enforcement policy which includes the issue of fixed penalties or prosecution where appropriate.”
