Coleraine to Limerick waterway vision delay

SINN Fein MLA, Billy Leonard, has criticised the Minister for Culture Arts and Leisure, Nelson McCausland, for putting the restoration of the Ulster Canal on the 'back burner' which could mean the vision may not be delivered until possibly 2020.

Mr Leonard said: “His statement in an Assembly debate proposed by me was that he will not even look at the issue until the Clones section of restoration is complete and that will be 2013. Reaction from pressure groups is rightly one of extreme disappointment.

“The view that the Minister should be dividing this work up into smaller units and at least progressing the scheme is wise.

“It is a pity the Minister and his officials don’t see this common sense approach in the context of ultimately realising the Coleraine to Limerick waterway vision. This would deliver jobs and a tourism product that will last for many decades.”
