City walls to light up this Christmas

LONDONDERRY'S city walls will be illuminated with a range of short films and projected images on Friday as part of the council's festive programme.

The illuminations will take place between 5pm and 7pm this Friday and will be repeated every Friday in the lead up to Christmas, with a different theme each week. This Friday's are all about children, so it should be a great attraction for all the family to enjoy.

The illuminations on December 11 will be based around the theme of Reminiscence, the images coinciding with a Turn Back Time Exhibit at the Tower Museum.

Some seasonal figures will also make their way to Guildhall Square over the next couple of weekends, as local street theatre company "In Your Space" bring their Ice King and Snow Queen, Carol Singers and Leaping Elves to the city centre.

This has been arranged as part of the Mayor's Charity appeal to raise money for his chosen charities - Foyle Search and Rescue; and Children in Crossfire.

Looking towards December 11, the Guildhall will once again play host to the Mayor's Christmas Choral event.

A wonderful evening of seasonal song is promised with the City of Derry Civic Junior Choirs and the WELB Youth Orchestra under the direction of Donal Doherty.

Another festive highlight will be the magnificent multi-cultural Bedlam Market at the former Presbyterian Church in Great James's Street which will take place every Thursday to Sunday in the run up to Christmas.

The market is run by SEEDS, an organisation which is at the heart of Londonderry's rapidly growing cultural diversity.

These are just a taster of the Christmas events being organized in the weekend running up to Christmas. Other highlights include the Multi-Cultural Christmas event being organized by SEEDS and being held at the Bedlam Market, on Great James Street, the reminiscence on Christmas' Past at the Tower Museum and the annual Christmas Walled City Market which will take place on December 18/19.
