City one of fewto get free Wifi

LONDONDERRY UK City of Culture 2013 is one of the lucky few locations in Northern Ireland to have been provided with free city centre WiFi with Investment Minister Arlene Foster ruling it out elsewhere.

The Minister was asked if her Department intended rolling out free wireless across Northern Ireland.

But she said she had no programme under which her Department could provide funding to councils to enable them to provide free WiFi in town centres.

“DETI has supported a number of pilot projects to provide free WiFi in the centres of Antrim, Ballycastle, Enniskillen, Newcastle and Londonderry,” she said.

She said full evaluations were undertaken following completion of these pilots and that DETI would be happy to share with other councils the learning that has been obtained from these pilot projects by making the evaluations available to them.
