City of Derry Guitar festival tuning up

The City of Derry Guitar Festival, which will take place this weekend in the North West Regional College (NWRC) will bring to Londonderry an array of world renowned international guitarists for a series of concerts spanning the genres of classical, flamenco, acoustic and slide blues guitar.

“Each concert will feature two artists and two different styles to offer audiences the opportunity to fully experience the versatile nature of the guitar,” says director Sean Woods.

The series of concerts will kick off on Thursday 20 August, 8pm, with a performance by classical guitar legend Carlos Bonell followed by Italian composer and producer Alberto Grollo on steel string acoustic guitar. On Friday the combination of classical and slide blues guitar will take audiences on a fascinating journey with the young and talented Wiktoria Szubelak from Poland and blues master Martin Harley. The series of concerts will conclude on Saturday 22 with one of the most interesting contemporary guitarists on the scene, Declan Zapala, who explores new avenues by combining classical guitar and percussive techniques, and the fire and passion of Flamenco all the way from Spain with Amir-John Haddad “El Amir” Flamenco. Other performances will include the Student Gala on Sunday 23 August, 7pm.
