Choir set to accompany folk legend Phil Coulter

A LOCAL primary school choir is to accompany one of the most famous singer-songwriters in Ireland.

Tannaghmore primary school will sing a number of Christmas carols with the legendary Phil Coulter later this month.

The 30-strong choir have been practising intensely for the concert, which will take place at St Peter’s GAA club on Friday, December 16.

Primary three teacher Joanne Magee will conduct, while classroom assistant Sinead McKenna will lend her expertise to the choir.

“Everyone is very excited,” said Ms Magee.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to play alongside one of Ireland’s greatest singer-songwriters.

“Some of the children were not aware of who he was, but when we explained who he was, and the contribution he has made to Irish music, they were over the moon.

“Some of the parents are big fans of Phil Coulter, so it will be special for them.”

Mrs McKenna, who is a member of the St Peter’s club, was asked if the school was willing to take part in the concert.

“It’s a great event for everyone involved,” she said.

“Everyone is working really hard and we are all gearing towards the big night.”

She added: “The kids are quite nervous, but nowhere near as nervous as me.”

The school choir will perform around five popular Christmas carols with Phil Coulter, before he takes to the stage with his own band for the rest of the evening.
