Call for action on play park

At yesterday, Tuesday’s meeting of DCC’s Planning Committee, Alderman Maurice Devenney called for action to ensure that over £200,000 in funding is lot lost for the proposed play park at Pinewood in Claudy.

Pinewood is the last residential area in that district without an up-to-date facility for play, and Mr Devenney said if the Land and Property Services did not successfully identify the landowners by December then time would run out for the funding and it would be clawed back for other projects.

Speaking to The Sentinel he said: “I raised the issue of the play park last year. There is a great need for up-to-date facilities of this kind in the Pinewood area and I am now worried that the funding could be lost. I am calling on my fellow Aldermen and Councillors to raise this matter and put pressure on the Land and Property Services to identify the landowner in question so that the title can be sorted out and work can progress on this project.

“It is my understanding that up to £250,000 has been ringfenced for this project and it is imperative that this money is not lost.

Mr Devenney raised the issue under Chairman’s business, and received support for his call from the SDLP’s Thomas Conway. He appealed to the Council Officers to speak to the LPS, to the other parties involved as well as to the members of the Assembly to get some motion started.

The Council’s strategic director, Anthony Tohill, told members that the council’s senior solicitor was in contact with the Land and Property Services in Belfast, but there were legal processes that had to be followed. He assured Mr Devenney that the senior solicitor was “doing everything he could to expedite this”.
