Breaking News: Man admits setting fire to Cody

One of two men accused of setting fire to Cody the family pet collie has admitted the offence.

Belfast Recorder Judge David McFarland told Andrew Richard Stewart, who is 23 and from Moira, that he “will be facing an inevitable prison sentence” after he pleaded guilty to ‘causing unnecessary suffering’ to the dog during an incident in Maghaberry two years ago.

Stewart, with an address at Wellington Park in Moira, went on trial on Wednesday at the city’s Crown Court along with Jamie Downey, also 23, from Chestnut Hall Avenue in the Co Down town.

Downey’s trial continues on Thursday afternoon, he denies a charge of cruelty.

Cody sustained horrific burns after she was doused in flammable liquid and set on fire in Maghaberry village on the morning of Sunday, August 26, 2012.

Despite her injuries, the brave three-year-old collie managed to make her way home to owners Natalie and Martin Agnew.
