£280K project to commence in Glengormley

The works, which will be funded by the Department for Communities and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will focus on the Carnmoney Road area of the town.

The investment of over £280,000 will see the replacement of granite pavements, the installation of new street furniture and an upgrade of street lighting.

Announcing the funding, Minister for Communities, Paul Givan MLA said: “This investment will bring significant improvements to Glengormley and remodel the landscape around Carnmoney Road into an attractive and modern environment.

“The scheme will build upon and complement the public realm works already completed at Portland Avenue and will contribute to further improving and regenerating the vitality of Glengormley.”

The DUP representative added: “This substantial investment will help make the town more attractive to those people who live and work in the area and demonstrates my Department’s commitment to supporting our town centres through the implementation of the Newtownabbey Regeneration Strategy. I look forward to seeing the scheme completed.”

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr John Scott said: “I am delighted that the Department for Communities has committed a further £200,000 to the Glengormley regeneration project with funding of £81,036 being provided by the council.

“The first phase of the scheme in Portland Avenue, which was completed in 2015, has been a welcome enhancement to the town, with the new state of the art street lighting, granite pavements and landscaping improving the overall look and feel of the area.

“Our town centres are a priority for council and this additional investment to improve the Carnmoney Road area of the town will be a key driver in improving the economic life of the town by helping to sustain and develop local businesses. The creation of a more attractive and pedestrian friendly environment will also help to support increased visitor numbers to the town.”
