Abbey Historical to mark International Women's Day

Belfast-born Emma Duffin was a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse and her First World War diaries have been edited by Trevor Parkhill MBE, former keeper of history at the Ulster Museum.

The Belfast-born nurse was initially sent to Egypt where she tended many of the Irish and Australian wounded of Gallipoli. She was later transferred to France and served there from immediately prior to the Battle of the Somme until the 1918 Armistice.

She had spent a year in Germany before the war and was able to communicate more sympathetically than her colleagues with wounded German soldiers. Guest speaker at the talk will be Trevor Parkhill and his talk takes place on March 8, at 7:30pm in Abbey Community College.

Non-members of the society are welcome and admission is £3.
