600 homes left without power

MORE than 600 homes were left without power on Friday night (November 25) when contractors damaged an electricity cable.

The power cut, which happened shortly before 8pm, affected homes on Victoria Street, the Antrim Road and Castle Lane.

Electricity was restored to all homes shortly before 10pm.

Shirley Devlin, NIE customer relations manager for the area, said: “Contractor damage to an underground electricity cable left 624 homes in the Victoria Street, Antrim Road and Castle Lane areas of Lurgan town without power on Friday.

“The fault occurred at 7.52pm, and NIE emergency repair teams responded immediately to isolate the cable and begin repairs.

“In order to carry out repairs customers were restored in stages with 361 customers restored by 8:32pm, 193 customers restored by 9.17pm and the remaining 70 customers had their electricity restored by 9.50pm.”

Charles Gardiner, chair of Lurgan Chamber of Commerce, praised NIE for their “quick response”.

“They did extremely well to restore power to so many homes in so short a period of time,” said Mr Gardiner.

“A lot of the homes had their power back within 40 minutes, which is impressive.”
