Getting prepared for spring

To grow good plants you need good soil. To improve the soil add plenty of well rotted manure or compost or leaf mould.

Spread over the soil at about 10cm deep this will help to suppress weeds and warm up the soil and conserve moisture around shrubs and trees in the summer time. Before applying mulch remove as many of the perennial weeds as possible.

If you are preparing the soil for vegetables cover with an area with black polythene – this will help to warm up the soil and keep weeds down for early sowing of vegetables including early potatoes.

Black polythene absorbs sunlight therefore heating and drying the soil. Manure from the garden centre is the best as it has been sterilised and should be weed free.

Good preparation and good planning will result in a good crop of vegetables.
