The local children’s charity is seizing the annual trend for all things bakery-related, inspired by TV’s Great British Bake Off, in the hopes of “raising” money for a very worthy cause.

Cash For Kids’ ‘Big Bake Day’ sponsored by NordMende, is asking for groups of bakers to join together to make and sell all manner of cakes, pastries and sweet treats in a countrywide competition. The competition invites teams in four categories (family & friends, schools, workplace and community groups) to get involved.

Groups from each category have until September 16 to sell as many treats to their family, friends, colleagues and even complete strangers to secure one of four places in a grand final.

The grand final will be held in Victoria Square on September 18, and will be part of a Downtown Radio live outside broadcast. This will see teams of up to 10 from each category let loose on the city to sell as much as possible, with one team taking home the title of ‘Big Bake Day Champions’ and £2,000 worth of NordMende electrical goods.

Cash for Kids charity manager, Andrea Charles is pleased that so many people will be supporting the charity. “Baking fever has swept the nation once again as the Great British Bake Off has returned and thousands of us are trying our hands at the cakes and buns we see in every episode. We thought this was a great opportunity to see all that hard work, and all those delicious treats, go to help a very worthy cause,” she said.
