To mark World Polio Day (October 24), club members of the Rotary Club of Carrickfergus presented bags of bulbs to care homes, learning disability homes and sheltered dwelling sites as a small ‘thank you’ for their caring in the community, which has been highlighted even more through the current Covid pandemic.

The purple crocus is intimately associated with the worldwide Polio Eradication Initiative.

Club members said they thoroughly enjoyed their socially distanced and doorstep delivery service to premises in the Carrickfergus, Whitehead and Greenisland areas.

They met representatives from each home and were able to thank them in person. All the Rotarian deliverers reported on their warm reception and on the recipients’ cheerfulness, energy and resilience.

Brenda Houston, president of Carrickfergus Rotary, said: “With so many normal club activities currently cancelled or restricted, it was such a pleasure for us to be able to recognise the valuable services provided by our care workers in the borough.

“We hope the purple crocus bulbs will bring a splash of colour to their surroundings for many springs to come, while at the same time raising awareness of the continuing world polio eradication initiative.”
