Carrick girl on the march

A young woman from Carrickfergus took part in the long distance Dutch March in August 1966.

The woman who was originally from East Antrim was serving in the Women’s Royal Army Corps, and had been a member of it since 1963.

There were 1500 marchers taking part in the event who were from 21 different nations from around the world.

These countries included Australia, Canada, Denamrk, Finland, GB, Ireland, France, Germany and Greece.

The parade that the woman took part in was the 50th International four day marches, which took place annually in Nijmweg, Holland. It was made up of competitors from both military and civilian backgrounds.

It was her first time taking part in the march.
