Ban on discos at Carrick Leisure Centre

Saturday night discos at Carrick Leisure Centre were suspended in 1985.

Carrick’s recreation officer, Alan Phair said that local government officers had taken the decision to suspend discos without first getting the approval of councillors because the situation was so serious it demanded immediate action.

He said: “Discos have been held at the centre on a regular basis and the council officers have become increasingly concerned about the situation after a series of incidents such as skirmishes inside the centre, the writing of graffiti in toilets and people vomiting, We are concerned about the good name of the centre.”

The move faced criticism from local children’s charity Gingerbread, which had organised discos at the centre.
