Greenisland Ladies’s two-game winning run came to an end on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Grosvenor at Carrickfergus Amphitheatre.
The visitors started strongly and it wasn’t long before they opened the scoring when they converted from a penalty corner.
Greenisland then started to come into the game with some great passes into the circle which forwards Dawn Montgomery and Norma Montgomery were unlucky to convert.
Greenisland came closest to levelling matters when Judith Sweeney’s switchpass found Dawn Montgomery who swept the ball across the circle to Jade Gardiner but she contrived to narrowly miss the target.
Grosvenor looked lively and began to dominate again, but some great defending from Sweeney, Claire Mayne, Chloe Carlin and Audrey MacCorquodale meant they didn’t have many chances in front of goal.
After a half time Greenisland returned to the pitch keen to net an equaliser and they almost did just that when Carlin won a penalty corner after running the length of the pitch.
The home side soon faced relentless pressure from Grosvenor.
Tight marking from the midfield of Ruth Creaney, Gemma Beattie and Jenny Henry, along with some timely tackles in defence and strong saves from goalkeeper Leah Crooks kept them at bay.
Grosvenor did manage to find a gap in Greenisland’s reargaurd in the last few minutes of the game as an attacker ran along the back line and passed the ball across the circle for a tap-in at the back post.
Despite the result, Greenisland put in an excellent team performance and they will carry a lot of confidence into their next match against Dromore.
