Met Office spokesperson, Grahame Madge, explains that the UK is currently experiencing an “unsettled period” of weather, with a multitude of “different weather types in the picture.”

The Met Office forecast for Wednesday (8 Jan) explains that it will be “breezy during the morning, but winds will begin to ease later on. There may be the odd shower over hills at times. Feeling notably colder.”

Wednesday evening will be “cold and dry at first with patchy frost, before rain and hill snow spreads northwards overnight, with heavy bursts at times. Turning less cold but windy in the small hours.”

The Met Office forecast for Northern Ireland adds: “Dry and cold this evening. Thickening cloud will bring rain across all parts in the early hours. Becoming windy along the east coast with strong northeasterly winds. “

The Met Office UK forecast also adds that Thursday (9 Jan) will be “wet and windy” and “rain and drizzle will continue for many, although the odd brighter spell is possible too.”

Mr Madge explains that the system bringing widespread rain to the UK, which is heavy in some parts, is also bringing some snow to northern hills.

Frosty conditions forecast

Friday (10 Jan) is also set to see frosty conditions, with Mr Madge adding that it will be a “frosty start for many”.

The Met Office forecast states that it will be a “frosty start to Friday otherwise dry and bright, but stronger winds later.
