The weather of late has seen warm temperatures and bright sunny skies, but that is all set to change this week as Tropical Storm Kyle is expected to hit the UK, bringing with it heavy rain, thunder and a drop in temperatures.

Here’s this week’s weather forecast.

What will the weather be like this week?

Monday 17 August will start misty for some southern and central areas, with rain in some places.

Sunshine will then develop in areas, which will set off “some torrential thundery downpours by afternoon,” the Met Office explains.

The north will stay drier, with the best of the sunshine in the northwest.

Monday evening will see showers and thunderstorms easing, but only slowly. One or two will persist through the night, but, in general, there will be variable cloud and some mist and fog.

Tuesday 18 August will see sunny spells, which will once again trigger a scattering of showers, especially after late morning. Some heavy showers are also possible, particularly further north and west.

Wednesday 19 August will begin fine for most places, before rain spreads northwards across all areas.

Rain will clear north on Thursday 20 August, with showers in the west and sunny periods in the east.

Friday 21 August will see blustery showers in most places, with some spells of cloud and sunny intervals.

Meteorologist Marco Petagna told The Mirror, “Remnants of tropical storms can get caught in the jet stream and bring premature autumnal weather to the UK. Computer models show tropical storm Kyle doing just this. It’s a big change in the weather.”

What will the weather be like this weekend?

This weekend will continue to be generally unsettled, with showers and longer spells of rain at times, which could potentially become heavy in places.

“Some isolated thunderstorms are possible, though these will not be as severe as recent days,” the Met Office adds.

It will also become windier than of late, especially in the south and west of the UK, where there is also a risk of gales.

Long-term forecast

Temperatures should be rather warm for many next week, despite the spells of unsettled weather.

However, these will likely fall away through the last weekend in August. It is forecast to become rather cool for many northern and western areas of the UK. This drop in temperatures will be accompanied by strong north-westerly winds.

Looking ahead to the beginning of September, although confidence is low for this period, “it is likely that conditions will become more changeable with drier and brighter days interspersed with periods of rain and strengthening winds,” explains the Met Office.

Temperatures should be around the average for this time of year. Towards the middle of September, there are some signs that high pressure could begin to dominate, especially across the south of the UK, with a return to more settled weather conditions.
