During Sunday’s Superbowl half-time show, Marvel teased the release of a new six episode Loki TV series on Disney+.

And while it looks like Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as the title character, the show’s creators weren’t giving much else away about the series, which is slated to be released in spring 2021.

So here is everything we know about Marvel’s latest project.

Marvel’s Superbowl 2020 teaser trailer

According to AdAge.com, the cost of a single 30 second TV advert during the half-time break at the Superbowl is $5.6 million (£4.3 million).

And because of the eye-watering cost, Marvel appear to have crammed as much into their spot as possible, teasing multiple projects at once.

The majority of the 30-second trailer focused on two upcoming Marvel shows, Falcon & Winter Soldier, and WandaVision.

Only the last few seconds are devoted to Loki, when Tom Hiddleston is shown handcuffed with his face covered in shadow.

In his only line before the clip ends, he mutters: “I’m going to burn this place to the ground”.

What the Loki trailer hints at

While Marvel aren’t giving much away, there are still some hints about the upcoming series from the short teaser clip.

Loki’s prison jumpsuit is embossed with the letters TVA, which could stand for the Time Variance Authority.

In the Marvel comics, the Time Variance Authority exists to stop time manipulation, suggesting that the series might revolve around time travel or dimension-hopping.

The prospect of the Time Variance Authority appearing in the new Loki series also suggests the inclusion of Professor Gamble, an eccentric time traveler who bears a distinct resemblance to Dr Who.

Who’s in the cast?

The confirmed cast for the series are Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, and Tom Hiddleston, who will reprise the title role of Loki.

It is not yet known which characters Wilson and Di Martino will play.

British actor, 36-year-old Sophie Di Martino, came to prominence when she starred alongside Lily James and Himesh Patel in the Danny Boyle-directed musical comedy Yesterday in 2019.

Di Martino recently finished filming on the upcoming movie Sweetheart, which also stars The Stranger actress Ella-Rae Smith.

Owen Wilson, legend of comedies like Wedding Crashers and The Royal Tenenbaums, might seem like an odd choice for a Marvel superhero TV series.

But the 51-year-old has taken on more serious roles before, like his character Nate Pullman in 2017’s Wonder. Wilson also has experience with action roles from his performances as the rakish Roy O’Bannon in the Shanghai franchise.

Wilson’s comedy background may come in useful for the new series, as Disney’s choice of producers hints that Loki might be more of an action comedy.

The series’ executive producer, Kate Herron, previously directed four episodes of the Netflix smash hit comedy Sex Education, and is slated to direct six episodes of Loki.

Meanwhile, fellow executive producer Michael Waldron has previously worked on comedies like Rick and Morty, and Community.
