East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs has spoken of his disappointment that the Public Health Agency’s Smokers Helpline will cease to be operational at the end of this month.

The Ulster Unionist representative said: “It is disappointing news that the Smokers Helpline service (0808 812 8008) will cease on December 31; however, it is important to note that www.want2stop.info is still available for information, advice and support on stopping smoking.”

A spokesperson for the PHA commented: “The demand for the smokers’ helpline has decreased in recent times, with smokers choosing to seek help from more online-based resources.

“As a result of this fall in demand, a decision was taken to close the helpline in order to focus attention on smokers’ preferred methods of seeking help.

“The Public Health Agency has a range of stop smoking services available to those who want to quit, including advice and information on www.want2stop.info and through social media, and Quit Kits to help kick the habit.

“Anyone wanting to stop smoking as their New Year’s resolution can visit www.want2stop.info for helpful hints, tips and guidance on getting help to quit.”
