Slight decrease in local unemployment

The number of people registering as out of work in the Carrick area saw a slight decrease in the past month, down by nine claimants.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey figures published for the month of January, the local claimant count now stands at 619 claimants compared to 628 claimants in December.

Wards in the Carrick district registering the most claimants for unemployment were Killycrot with 85 (84 in December); Eden with 60 claimants (55 in December); and Sunnylands with 56 (52 in December).

The Carrick wards with the lowest claimant counts were Boneybefore with 12 claimants (14 in December), Knockagh with 15 claimants (12 in December) and Woodburn with 21 (17 in December).

In January 2018, the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Northern Ireland was 28,400 (3.1% of the workforce).

This represents a decrease of 700 from the previous month’s revised figure.

The latest NI unemployment rate was below the UK average of 4.4% and was the third lowest unemployment rate of the UK regions.
