Carrick museum to receive photo donations
Carrick’s historical archives have been given a boost thanks to new donations to the town’s museum.
The council’s Borough Growth Committee has agreed to accept donations of 23 black and white photos which include images of Carrick’s longest serving mayor TJ Patterson.
Carrickfergus DUP councillor Alderman Billy Ashe said that the only picture of TJ Patterson on display is in the Mayor’s Parlour in Carrick Town Hall.
He pointed out that TJ Patterson had been mayor for 26 years.
“I think this is bread and butter stuff we should have. He was mayor for 26 years. I think we should at least be holding that in our community archive.
“Better to be looking at them than looking for them at some stage.”
Noting Carrick’s “colourful maritime history”, Ald Ashe also proposed accepting a collection of books based on a maritime theme despite these items falling outside the council’s collections development policy.
The collection includes the titles “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville and “Treasure Island” by RL Stevenson.
“We have talked about potential for a maritime museum at some stage”, he said.
