New defibrillator installed at centre

A new community access defibrillator has been installed at Carrickfergus Civic Centre, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has said.

The equipment makes it possible for even more people to respond to a medical emergency where a defibrillator is required.Over 30,000 people suffer from sudden cardiac arrest at home or in public places, in the UK each year.If a defibrillator is used and CPR is performed within three to five minutes, the chances of survival are dramatically increased from 6 percent to 74 percent.Councillor Cheryl Johnston along with Friends of the 36th Ulster Division, Carrickfergus have been supporting the need for a defibrillator in the town for a number of months.A spokesperson for the group said: “The Friends of the 36th Ulster Division Carrickfergus would like to thank Mid and East Antrim Borough Council for accommodating a defibrillator at the Civic Centre.“Under the guidance of former councillor, Noel Jordan, our group has been looking to have a defibrillator sited in the town centre area where it would be available to the public on a 24 hour basis. group has been looking to have a defibrillator sited in the town centre area where it would be available to the public on a 24 hour basis. “Our reasoning was simple, we wanted to give something back to our community.“We contacted the council to see what options where available and they were happy to accommodate space for it at the Civic Centre, where it is now available for emergency use.“Thankfully this has now happened and we congratulate the council for this.”
