Carrickfergus couple’s diamond wedding anniversary surprise from the Queen

A Carrickfergus couple were thrilled to receive congratulations from the Queen as they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Carol and Robert (Roy) Reid were married on September 2, 1961 at St Matthew’s Church on the Shankill and had their reception at the Wellington Park, Belfast.

Carol and Roy, who were 18 and 23 years of age respectively at the time, started married life on the Shankill. They had one daughter and one son when they lived in Belfast and another son after moving to Carrickfergus in 1970.

During their working careers, Roy was employed at ICI and also as a taxi driver from the early 80s for local depots, while Carol was part of the team in Spar, Sunnylands.

The letter from the Queen was among a number of surprises for the couple with their family treating them to a break on the North Coast and dinner at the Windrose, Carrickfergus.
