The Carrickfergus Castle roof replacement scheme, along with the Golden Gate residential development in Greenisland, are two of 33 local construction projects from across Northern Ireland which will be judged on their role in transforming communities and the everyday lives of people.

Shortlisted in the heritage category, Carrickfergus Castle is one of the most complete examples of Norman architecture in Northern Ireland, and one of the most complete castles of its type in Britain or Ireland.

The project, led by the Historic Environment Division, has overseen replacement of the roof to the Great Keep with an historically appropriate open oak truss design.

The works are intended to secure the integrity of the roof and allow a programme of further interpretive and conservation works within the Castle complex.

The project also aims to safeguard the Great Tower for the future, ensuring that the monument can continue to be seen, accessed by the public, and enjoyed.

Based on current visitor numbers, which are anticipated to rise once the site is re-opened, 750,000 visitors are expected to the site over the next 10 years, with a significant potential benefit to the local economy.

In the residential category is Golden Gate, a development of 60 houses in Greenisland. The settlement’s benefits include the opportunity to live within commuting distance of the city by sustainable means. The range of houses in the development also addresses lifetime needs.

The RICS award categories include commercial, student accommodation, heritage, education, healthcare, residential, infrastructure, and leisure.

The winners will be announced at the RICS Northern Ireland ceremony on May 21.
