Young people from Carrick were among teenagers from across east Antrim who received youth training awards at a presentation night.

Organised by the Education Authority North Eastern Region’s Youth Service, the celebration took place at Glengormley Youth Centre.

In honour of the late Danny Nolan, who was a widely respected youth officer, a special award was presented to Carrickfergus Junior Gateway in recognition of their work with young people over the past year.

Certificates were presented by Pat Morgan, assistant senior education officer, Ursula Meehan, staff development officer and Davy Norris, Newtownabbey, Carrick and Larne Area youth officer, to leaders and young people who have successfully completed one of the area’s training courses.

A total of 305 participants attended courses which included Youth Support Workers Qualification, Child Protection Training, OCNNI (Open College Network Northern Ireland) Youth Development, OCNNI Youth Leadership, Youth Peer Leadership and Millennium Volunteers.

Mr Norris and senior youth workers, Valerie McKenzie and Leigh Whittley are keen to develop the service offered to young people and adult leaders. To further this aim, a comprehensive training programme is offered each year to all part-time youth workers and uniformed organisation leaders.

The presentation night was a result of this developmental training.
