Helenium is a great hardy perennial for any garden at this time of the year. It starts to flower from late July continuing to mid September, and has a wonderful show of red, orange or yellow flowers.
With regular dead heading it will continue to flower well into the autumn. After flowering they will die down only to return next year with an even larger display.
Helenium can vary in height from 30cm to 90cm. The particular variety at Inver Garden Centre is Helenium ‘Mardi Gras’, with a height of 65cm, orange petals and a red centre.
It is a also a very strong grower and should not need staking.
The Helenium is named after Helen of Troy and according to legend the petals sprang from her tears. Hardy perennials can be planted at any time during the year.
