Traffic attendants to ‘concentrate’ on Carrick’s Market Place

The measure is outlined in a letter by Mid and East Antrim Council’s chief executive following a call for traffic calming at Market Place.

Anne Donaghy was replying to Gary McCabe, whose wife Anita owns Market Place shop The Mulberry Bush. Mr McCabe said cars using the area both for parking and as a thoroughfare were a “major health and safety issue”. He called for council action on the matter.

Acknowledging these concerns, the council chief executive said: “Unfortunately, this is not a council enforcement matter but rests with DfI (Department for Infrastructure). On this basis, one of my officers has contacted DfI in relation to the ongoing issues that you have raised.

“The traffic attendants have been instructed to concentrate on Market Place for the foreseeable future and the team leader has been asked to accompany the traffic attendants when they are on patrol.”

Following lockdown parking enforcement teams were back on the streets from June 22 with penalties reintroduced on June 29.

Meanwhile, business owners were recently surveyed over their views on traffic and pedestrian zones in the town centre and a report is due to be submitted to the council.
