The incident occurred on Saturday evening when they were again responding to anti-social behaviour at Prince Andrew Way in the Co Antrim town.

One of the officers, who came under attack, said: “ Whilst responding to a report of a possible assault, I noticed a group of young people near the garage. When I got out of our vehicle to speak to them a large piece of rubble was thrown from behind the wooden fence. It struck my door, narrowly missing the window and me.

“I was there to try and support someone who may of been hurt and narrowly missed injury myself. This resulted in my colleague and I, having to patrol the immediate and surrounding area in an armoured landrover.

“I don’t want this and I’m sure the community don’t want this but this is a consequence of such behaviour.”

In September, a patrol vehicle was damaged when it came under attack from stone-throwing youths in the same area of Carrickfergus. Click here.

Meanwhile, the PSNI also received reports of anti social behaviour on Saturday evening in Greenisland.

“Anti social behaviour is not funny, not to be minimised and not wanted in the community.
