Carrickfergus College has congratulated its outgoing Year 12 group after they picked up top grades at GCSE.

Some 62 percent of students achieved five or more A* to C grades in this year’s exams.

High achievers included Rhys McFadden, who gained eight A grades and one B, and Kane Brennan with six A* grades, one A and two Bs.

There were screams of jubilation from Spanish teacher Mrs Haddock as Sophie McFall opened her envelope to reveal she had achieved an A* grade in Spanish, along with further two A* grades, two As and four Bs.

Other notable successes included Owen Shearer, James Sharples, Chelsea Burrows, Peter Campbell, Iuri Sousa, Matthew Dyer and Charlie Hagan.

College principal Hedley Webb thanked the parents and teachers for supporting the pupils, “These grades are certainly the result of hard work from the pupils but we must also thank those who supported them behind the scenes,” he said.
