Visitors had the opportunity to tour the junior campus and were able to take part in a range of activities to give them a taste of secondary school life.

Science classrooms proved particularly popular with a steady hand game, a timed mirror writing challenge, dissections, flame tests and popping candy experiments to name but a few, whilst students who visited the HE department were able to find out about “starting the day the best way!” with fact finding activities all about breakfast.

In Geography there was the discover box challenge, where in the world would you most like to visit mapwork, quizzes and dingbats while further down the corridor in Modern Foreign Languages, pupils sampled French food, delved into online competitions using Linguascope and challenged each other to the MFL piñata competition. There was also the opportunity to sample Chinese culture and language from the school’s Confucius teachers – an enrichment subject that all year 8 pupils undertake

The creatively inclined were treated to a feast for the eyes in Art, with a wide range of 2 and 3D work on show from current Key Stage 3 pupils as well as work produced by GCSE and A level students. There was also the opportunity to engage in a range of activities including making door hangers and customised key rings.

ICT offered the chance to program the BBC Microbit as well as produce customised key rings whilst young Sports Leaders showcased some of the sports on offer at school. The English department invited visitors to take part in brain engaging dances, trailer editing, book review writing, bookmark making and podcast recording. With many more activities to experience in other departments including Music, Technology, History and Drama, Carrickfergus Academy said it was a busy night. There was also the opportunity to hear from current pupils in year 8 and 11.

Parents and prospective students who missed open night and would like to visit are encouraged to contact the school office (junior or senior campus) to arrange an appointment.
