What is your business?

I design and make handcrafted fabric aprons for adults and children as well as bags, oven gloves, tea cosies, bunting and seasonal gifts.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up doing what you are doing now?

I have always loved making thing for friends and family.

I worked in retail for over 10 years, so I thought with my skills and experience, I would see if it would work as a business idea.

Did you always want to run your own enterprise?

I have always thought it would be interesting to see if the general public would like and buy my products. I am so glad that it has worked and I have done what I wanted to do.

What skills/qualifications do you require for the role?

I did a theatrical costume design course, which helped with my sewing skills.

I have a BTEC Art and Design qualification, which helps me with matching colours and designs.

I am also qualified as a visual merchandiser which helps with the displays on my stalls.

Has your business been affected by the current recession?

So far my business has not been affected by the recession, but some months have been slower than others.

Unfortunately this is part of running your own business.

What were the biggest challenges you faced when setting up and what support did you get?

The biggest thing you have to do is in the back of your mind is think, will it work, and thankfully I can say that my business idea has worked for me.

I really do have to thank Carrickfergus Enterprise for all their help and support, especially with my website and the social media workshops that they run.

What three tips could you offer those considering starting their own business?

1. Do what you know and have the skills for.

2. Start small

3. Research the best social media that suits your business needs.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

I am always researching different ideas and trends.

I will be looking for new fabrics designs to replace old designs to give new ranges.

Also I need to think ahead to next Christmas.

What do you get up to in your free time?

Running your own business you don’t get much free time, but when I do I enjoy gardening and going to see my brothers, sister and their family in England.

If you could swap places with anyone who would it be and why?

Cath Kidston has been one of my inspirations to start up my own business

I really love her ranges.
