Body recovered from sea at Blackhead Lighthouse

Portmuck Coastguard has confirmed that a body has been recovered from the sea at Blackhead Lighthouse in Whitehead.

The alarm was raised at 12.20 pm when it was reported that a person had fallen over the cliff.

Portmuck and Larne Coastguard Search and Rescue teams were tasked to the scene with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service’s specialist rescue team and other fire crews from Whitehead, Larne and Carrickfergus.

The NIFRS Specialist Rescue Team assisted the Coastguard in the recovery of a body from the water near Blackhead Path.

The air ambulance, RNLI from Larne and Bangor and the Dublin Coastguard helicopter also assisted at the scene.

A spokesperson for the NIAS said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 12.08 on Tuesday 02 April following reports of an ongoing incident at Blackhead Lighthouse, Whitehead.”

PSNI Inspector Mick Wood stated: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man after a body was recovered from the water near the Blackhead Path, Whitehead, this afternoon (Tuesday, April 2).

“A post-mortem will be carried out in due course. There are no further details at this time.”
