Angry confrontation with anti-social youths

An angry confrontation took place between youths and members of the community on Saturday night following tensions with on going anti-social behaviour in Carrick.

Police said the incident occurred between a large group of youths and “disgruntled members of the community” in St Brides Street car park, before it “spilled over” onto North Street.

Officers in Carrickfergus have appealed for information and witnesses following reports of assaults.

Inspector Trevor Atkinson said: “Police received a report of an assault on a female, aged in her 30s, in the North Road area of Carrickfergus on Saturday, June 9. It was reported the assault occurred at around 8pm. The woman was treated at hospital for injuries to her face.

“We received a further report of an assault on a male, aged in his 20s, in the Albert Road area, which was reported to have occurred at approximately 9pm. The man was treated by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service at the scene for a cut to the back of his head.

“We know the area was busy on Saturday evening, and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything, or has information they believe could assist with our investigation, to contact police in Carrickfergus on the non emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1536 of 09/06/18.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
