Carrick bandsman Jim Cavan received a 50-year bandsman medal from the Flute Band League in spring 1961.
Mr. Cavan had learnt to play the flute at the age of eight years and had been regarded as “one of the finest piccolo players in the province”.
Mr. Cavan, from Belfast Road, was a founder member of Sullatober Band, later known as Carrick Silver Band, with his father and three brothers.
His grandfather had been a member of the 81st Foot Regiment Flute Band when stationed at Birr in County Westmeath. The Second 81st had been stationed at Kinsale, but later moved to Cork, Galway, and Dundalk.
