A SPECIALISED brain injury rehabilitation programme has been introduced locally by the Northern Health Trust.
The Brain Injury Service recently opened the Whitehead facility to complement existing services provided in Moneymore and Ballymena.
The Adapt programme helps small groups of clients by giving them concentrated help to do things that can make a major difference to their lives and those of their families.
People who have acquired a brain injury quite often need to re-learn basic skills. This may be as simple as re-integrating with family, or crossing the road, using a cash machine, taking the bus, or going back to work.
Dr Rosemary Macartney, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, said: "We are providing a unique rehabilitation programme for people with moderate to severe brain injuries. A brain injury of this level may affect a person's ability to think clearly, speak properly and physically to move normally. People with brain injuries may have to re-learn to do a lot of things we take for granted.
"Our multi-disciplinary team provides a range of services including, clinical neuropsychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy. This programme not only offers direct help for clients but provides a support service for their families.
"Adapt improves the patient's thinking, communication and physical skills, as well as improving their confidence and self-esteem."
Some clients who have completed the programme have been able to consider going back to work. Most, according to the Trust, achieve increased independence and are able to play a greater role within their families and social circles.
