The weather was brutal last Thursday and the field for the Open Stableford was seriously diminished.

It was also day one of the Irish Open at Royal County Down and quite a number of members had made the short journey to Newcastle.

Gavin Greer (16) was not deterred by the weather and he shot a superb winning score of 39 points.

Gavin was a 17 handicapper last Monday and he is now playing off 13. That’s a reduction of 4 shots in 4 days. That doesn’t happen too often.

Aaron Buchanan (17) was runner-up with 35 points.

Philip Mallon (9) went out early, shot 34 points, picked up third prize and headed straight to the Irish Open. He was hoping to pick up a few tips about playing in the wind and rain.
