Rangers need goals galore, says Taggart

Experienced defender Glenn Taggart believes Carrick need to net more goals from all over the park in their quest for promotion to the Premiership.

Rangers’ Championship 1 campaign kicks off this weekend with the visit of Donegal Celtic to Taylors Avenue, and Taggart knows the west Belfast men will be difficult to break down.

“I think it’s a tough opener,” he said. “I know we lost to Donegal Celtic in the last game of last season with a very changed team. We know that they have signed a lot of young, fit players. They’ll be in-your-face and will make it very hard for us to settle on the ball.”

He added: “We’ve re-signed Correy Davidson, we signed Kyle Cherry and we’ve got Miguel Chines, so we’re a bit better going forward. And with the likes of Aidy Watson (in midfield), we’re not as open as we probably once were.”

With more firepower in the ranks, the 33-year-old hometown hero reckons Rangers could pose a more attacking threat during Gary Haveron’s first full season in charge.

“I think we need to score more goals ... I wouldn’t say we struggled with goals last year, but we didn’t get them from everywhere,” he said.

“I think with Cherry signing, Correy back on board and Conor McCloskey pushing on a little bit more, that’s what the manager is looking for.”
