IRISH LEAGUE: Addis impressed with Rangers’ fight and desire

Glentoran’s Jonny Addis said Carrick Rangers deserved the point from Saturday’s 1-1 draw and thinks they could surpirse a few teams in the Danske Bank Premiership.

The former Rangers player, who won the Irish Cup with the Glens last season, told the Times: “I think if Carrick show the same fight and desire that they showed against us then they’ll not be too far away from getting results every week.

“Gary (Haveron) has clearly got them playing for him and they made it difficult for us albeit I thought we dominated the first-half. But they dominated in the second-half and were well worthy of a point. So, no complaints.”

It may not have been the result Addis and the Glens were after, but the Carrickfergus native was happy to make a return to his old patch.

“It was good to be back,” he added. “It’s been a while since I played at Taylor’s Avenue. We’re disappointed with the result. We came here for three points and came away with one.

“It’s a case of dusting ourselves down and going again and searching for three points to get our season started. We haven’t really got going yet.

“We had a good performance on Wednesday night (against Crusaders) and a decent first-half against Carrick, but we haven’t done it over 90 minutes so we’ll be hoping this weekend’s game against Warrenpoint is the time to do just that and get three points.”

Saturday marked Addis’s first start for the east Belfast club this term. “I was delighted to be back in starting eleven,” he said. “I’ve been waiting patiently and it was a good time to get back in for the game against Carrick.”
