Haveron promises changes for Cup clash with Donegal Celtic

Carrick Rangers may be taking a calculated risk, but manager Gary Haveron insists he is not disrespecting the competition in any shape or form by making changes to his team for Saturday’s visit of Donegal Celtic in the Intermediate Cup.

“It’s is an important tournament and we will be trying to progress, of course we will. But there are some players who deserve to get match time and I feel this is a good opportunity to give them it,” he stressed.

“Ben Browne hasn’t had the pitch time he deserves, and neither has Aaron Traynor who is back into the fold and worthy of a chance in the first team, as well as some of the younger boys.

“But I would have to say whoever wears the Carrick Rangers jersey will always do a professional job. Everybody is entitled to get their chance and, while we absolutely prioritise the league as our main target, we still want to win every game we play.”

Haveron, whose team defeated Nicky Maye’s men on the opening day of the Championship 1 season, insisted he is wary of the threat they possess.

“Donegal Celtic are a young side and are very much improved and getting better by the week, so there is no doubt that they will provide us with a stern challenge; they’re a hard-working side,” he said.

Carrick won 4–1 against Albert Foundry at the weekend, booking their spot in the fifth-round draw of the Irish Cup.

“It was comfortable enough in the end, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have to work to earn our place in the draw.

“We got off to a terrific start, scoring twice in the opening stages. Miguel Chines intercepted a pass from the goalkeeper and rounded him before slipping the ball to the empty net and Ben Roy netted the second soon after.

“But we were then guilty of missing a spate of chances. Then Albert Foundry got a goal back and we were looking back at that first half wondering why it was wasn’t match over.

“However, we went out again with the same determined attitude and the third goal came inside the opening 10 minutes and from there on there was never going to be a doubt about the outcome.

“We’ll settle for more of the same on Saturday, whoever happens to be in the team,” added the positive Carrick manager.
