The Championship 1 club has offered the Duke of Cambridge, who also holds the title Baron Carrickfergus, the opportunity to become Honorary Life President at Taylor’s Avenue.

To help mark its 75th anniversary, the club has penned a letter to Prince William asking him to consider the role which it says would involve assisting ‘in promoting awareness of the club to the wider community’.

The correspondence, addressed to Kensington Palace in London, reads: ‘It would be a great honour for everyone associated with the club to have a formal connection to Baron Carrickfergus and trust you will give this request your consideration.’

His Royal Highness was granted the peerage Baron Carrickfergus by the Queen when he married Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, in 2011.

Whether he chooses to accept the local club’s offer remains to be seen but Rangers board member Adam Simpson said: “We at Carrick Rangers are delighted to be able to offer Prince William the position of Honorary Life President.

“While he may be best known as an Aston Villa supporter, he will always be more than welcome at Taylor’s Avenue. We would be extremely privileged if he was willing to accept our invitation.”
