Eagles are no match for St Luke’s

Whitehead Eagles were no match for a highly impressive St Luke’s as they went 9-2 in Saturday’s 2b encounter in Twinbrook.

Eagles, with just three matches left, are anxiously looking over their shoulders, given that second-bottom Drumbo are now stringing some results together and are just three points adrift of Whitehead with a game in hand.

It was Whitehead who were first to make their mark on six minutes with Chris McMillan crashing home an Alan Clarke pass.

The lead lasted until the 21st minute, but, having discovered the route to goal, St Luke’s rammed home their advantage with three further goals before the break.

After the interval, it was Eagles who were again first out of the blocks; Clarke dispatching the penalty after John Lorimer had been tugged in the box.

St Luke’s, however, once more stepped up a gear, underscoring their superiority with five further goals.

Eagles’ manager, Raymond Clarke, said: “I can’t fault my players for effort, they never gave up, but St Luke’s were just too good for them. We never stopped running or chasing. There was no point in lying down and we thought we’d have a go at them, trying to get another goal but it meant that, having pushed up, for those last few goals we were caught on the break.”

Whitehead Eagles: Morrell – Stewart, Adrain, Gall, Tierney – Welsh, Clarke, Moran, J Lorimer – C McMillan (McNair), D Lorimer. Sub (unused): Williams.
