Dolan deal is ‘not dead in the water’

Last month it seemed just a matter of time before the final details were ironed out on a deal that would see Shane Dolan make a comeback with Carrick Rangers. Now it doesn’t seem so certain!

“We’d love to have Shane back at Taylor’s Avenue, and there’s still a chance it will happen, but it’s just not as simple as both parties agreeing. If that was all that was needed it would have been a done deal well before now,” said Rangers manager Gary Haveron.

“Shane desperately wants to come back and he would be a great asset to the squad, but he lives in Dundalk and that means a lot of travelling and that costs money.

“He has other offers on the table (and) so far we haven’t been able to seal the deal.

“It really all boils down to affordability. Because the prospect of his coming back came after we had concluded most of the other business in the summer, the budget doesn’t extend to bringing him on board.

Carrick Rangers had been living a nomadic existence for the last three years and it was a big drain on resources having to rent facilities from other clubs, plus there was next to nothing coming in the way of gate money.

“Club officials and our superbly loyal supporters have worked wonders to keep the club’s head above water, to be honest. So we have to be very wary of the spending.

“Shane would love to play for Carrick again, but it would be unrealistic to feel he should take a financial hit for travelling up all the time, so we have to keep trying to find some way round the logistical problem of the deal.

“It’s certainly not dead in the water and we will keep trying to secure a solution, but at the moment I have to say that there’s nothing imminent.”
