Lowest rate increase

Householders and business owners in Carrick were set to enjoy the lowest rates increase across the Province in April 1986.

The new domestic rate in the borough was 155.88 in the pound- an increase of 8.34 per cent. The new business rate went up by 7.7 per cent to 167.88 in the pound.

Although this represented the lowest percentage increase of the 26 district council areas in Northern Ireland, it was still above the rate of inflation.

The rates bill is made up of two components. The first is the district rate which is set by individual councils.

The second is the regional rate which is set by the Government for Northern Ireland.
