The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough was last week leading a variety of celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday – one of which had particular local significance.
Glenys Holtom, from Carrickfergus also marked her 90th birthday and first citizen, Councillor Billy Ashe was on hand to add his congratulations.
Speaking at a social meeting of the Senior Moments Group, for those aged over 50 in the Carrickfergus area, he said: “The Queen has been a remarkable role model to many of us and it gives me great pleasure to see her birthday celebrated in the borough, with our beacon lighting and fireworks for example.
“I will also be enjoying other events across the borough including some that are appropriate for the older generation to enjoy, so it is especially important to note a citizen becoming a fellow nonagenarian with Her Majesty.
“I therefore congratulate Glenys on her birthday and wish her many more birthdays to come. “
The Mayor added: “I look forward to continuing our royal celebrations into June along with the Queen enjoying her official birthday and urge everyone – especially our senior citizens – to get involved and enjoy.”
