A CARRICK schoolgirl has been competing in the area final of the annual Rotary Youth Leadership competition.

Emma McLean, of Ulidia Integrated College, took part in the event hosted by Belfast East Rotary club at the Stormont Hotel on Thursday of last week.

It followed success in the local heat of the competition which is open to young people aged between 15 and 18 and offers the chance to participate in a week long personal development programme to include seminars in Belfast and Dublin and the opportunity of representing Rotary in Ireland at Euroscola in Strasbourg.

Following a selection procedure at school level Gillian Scott, Carrick College, John Cameron, Downshire and Emma competed for a place in the area final.

Competition organiser, Carrickfergus Rotarian Jim Dunlop, and his panel of judges including local businessmen David McCune, Rotarians Sydney Johnston and chairman Rickie Erskine interviewed the candidates and were extremely impressed by the calibre.

Rotary President Michael McCune congratulated all the participants.
