Four Carrickfergus residents bagged themselves a teddy bear each during the Wings Appeal ‘Name Me Claim Me’ competition.
The lucky winners were presented with their ‘Red Ted’ prizes just before Christmas during a fundraising bag pack at Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus store.
Wings Appeal Organiser, Wing Commander Noel Williams paid tribute to the retailer for its support and those who contributed to the fundraising effort.
Mr Williams said: “We were delighted to be asked by Sainsbury’s to help them out by assisting their customers pack their bags on what is their busiest day of the year.
“The very generous people of Carrick donated a total of £1,658 during the day, for which we are most grateful.
“We also took the opportunity to present our ‘Name Me Claim Me’ winners with the Red Teds they had won by correctly guessing their names.”
Bears were presented to Oliver Mercer (6), William Hopkins (10), Naomi Perry (10) and Deirdre Hammond, who is a member of Sainsbury’s staff.
Lorraine McCalmont also won a bear.
Carrickfergus RAFA Branch chairman Harry Sharkey said: “We are truly grateful to all those who gave so generously as indeed we are to all our helpers, especially the boys and girls of No’s 2062 and 1919 Air Training Corp Squadrons. Having raised £40,000 during the 2013 Wings Appeal, this really sets us up well for a splendid start to the 2014 campaign.”
The Wings Appeal is the RAF Association’s campaign that helps raise vital funds needed to support serving and ex-RAF personnel and their families.
