The UK Independence Party (UKIP) has named Carrick businessman Noel Jordan as its first ever local election candidate in the area.

The party is also preparing to announce further runners for the new Mid and East Antrim District Council and is holding an information meeting in the Town Hall on Monday night. It was founded in 1993 to campaign for the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union which it regards as “undemocratic, expensive, bossy”.

Henry Reilly, party chairman (NI), said: “In Noel, we have a man who epitomises everything UKIP stands for; he is a family man with two sons, he runs his own business so he understands the pressures faced by the business community in the current harsh economic climate but with that comes a man who is used to serving his community and is someone who we know is held in high regard within the greater Carrickfergus and East Antrim area.”
