Dangerous dogs left to run loose

FROM:- Angry Cat Owner

I read your story in the Lurgan Mail about cats being savaged in cruel attacks by dangerous dogs running loose on estates and was appalled.

We too had an incident on Tuesday, April 28. A dog which has been identified as a Lurcher which is a hunting dog, went on the rampage and cruelly attacked and killed three cats in my estate, Clanrolla Park.

One of these cats was my cat Mitzi, who was only a year old. Mitzi was on a 6ft fence and the dog jumped up and got him. Neighbours tried to save Mitzi but the dog turned on them and they could not save him, they said that this dog was very vicious. I came home from work on Tuesday night to learn that Mitzi and two other cats had been killed by this dog, I was devastated.

A family has moved in nearby with four Lurcher dogs one of which was suspected of killing these three cats, the dog warden has investigated this matter and has said that he did not think that one of these dogs has killed the cats.

People are keeping dangerous dogs in these housing estates and training them in blood sports and some of these people are letting their dogs run loose. It is only a matter of time before some young child is going to be killed by a dangerous dog running loose and we do not want this to happen.

I cannot believe that under the Dangerous Dog Act, there is no legislation to allow these dangerous dog owners to be prosecuted. This law has got to be changed. There are a lot of cat owners that will be appalled by these stories and I’m sure that the will all agree that their cats should be able to be safe in their own enviornment and not have vicious and dangerous dogs running loose to kill their family pets.
